In a significant development, the National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo moto cognizance of the alarming sexual assault case involving a 19-year-old student from Anna University. This prompt action follows a letter from BJP state president K. Annamalai, urging the NCW to intervene and take strict action against those responsible for publicly revealing the victim’s identity. The NCW has strongly condemned the heinous crime and expressed its unwavering support to the victim in her quest for justice. In a statement, the Commission emphasized its deep concern over the accused’s history of habitual offending.
“The Tamil Nadu Police’s failure to take decisive action in previous cases has been identified as a serious instance of negligence. This failure has emboldened the accused, allowing him to commit such crimes with impunity,” the Commission stated.
The NCW further noted that this glaring lapse in law enforcement has contributed to a deterioration in law and order in Tamil Nadu, resulting in a loss of trust and security among the public, particularly women.
In response, NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has directed the Tamil Nadu Director-General of Police (DGP) to ensure that the victim receives free medical care and protection. Additionally, the Chairperson has instructed the DGP to invoke Section 71 of the BNS Act, 2023, in the First Information Report (FIR), which mandates stricter punishment in cases of sexual assault.
The Commission has also called for action against the police officers responsible for disclosing the victimās identity, an action that violates the Supreme Court’s guidelines as well as Section 72 of the BNS Act.
In a separate development, former NCW member Kushboo Sundar has appealed to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi to personally intervene in the matter. Sundar highlighted the accusedās alleged ties to the ruling DMK party and its leaders.
Kushboo urged the state leadership to show compassion and empathy towards the victim and her family, emphasizing the importance of addressing the emotional and social trauma that victims of such crimes endure. “Wake up, listen to the woes of every mother, hear the silent cries of every woman. Be a little more compassionate and feel the pain of those who suffer in darkness,” she urged.
The NCWās intervention highlights the seriousness of the issue, demanding swift and just action to ensure the safety and dignity of women in Tamil Nadu.
