BJP appointed Governor to trouble TN govt: Kanimozhi

The DMK staged widespread protests across Tamil Nadu on Tuesday, with Deputy General Secretary Kanimozhi accusing the BJP-led Central Government of installing Governor RN Ravi to create hurdles for the state government and insult Tamils. Addressing a gathering of party members, Kanimozhi, also the MP for Thoothukudi, criticized the Governor for politicizing his role and urged him to step aside if unwilling to fulfill his constitutional duties.

Governor’s Actions Spark Protests

The protests were organized to condemn Governor Ravi’s decision to skip reading the State government’s prepared address at the opening session of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly this year. Highlighting that this marked the third instance of the Governor allegedly disrespecting the Assembly, Kanimozhi remarked, “The gubernatorial position is not meant for politics. If he is uninterested in addressing the Assembly, he can take leave.”

Kanimozhi, invoking the legacy of former DMK stalwarts C. N. Annadurai and M. Karunanidhi, assured party members that the DMK, under the leadership of Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, would surmount the challenges posed by the BJP government and its representative in the state. “There is a limit to our leader Stalin’s patience. The day is not far when the Governor will be sent back,” she said, warning of escalating tensions.

DMK Criticizes Governor’s Boycott

Joining the protests, DMK Organization Secretary RS Bharathi alleged that Governor Ravi was attempting to disrupt decades of established practice by refusing to deliver the government’s customary address. Speaking to reporters, Bharathi said, “The Governor has no valid reason for his boycott. His excuses are baseless and motivated by jealousy over Tamil Nadu’s achievements under DMK rule, which surpass those of states governed by his party.”
Tensions Between State and Governor
The strained relationship between the Tamil Nadu government and Governor Ravi has been a recurring theme since his appointment. The DMK has repeatedly accused the Governor of undermining the state’s autonomy and attempting to impose the BJP’s political agenda. The party views his actions, including the Assembly boycott, as part of a broader strategy to weaken non-BJP governments in the country.
