Madurai, Apr 30:
Traffic diversions will be enforced across Madurai on Friday morning in view of Kallazhagar’s ceremonial entry into the Vaigai River, a major highlight of the ongoing Chithirai Festival at the Meenakshi Amman Temple. The event is expected to draw massive crowds, prompting authorities to implement extensive traffic regulations to manage movement and ensure public safety.
According to police, key routes leading to the riverbanks will remain closed, including the AV bridge, Yanaikkal new bridge and roads connecting to Ramarayar Mandapam. Vehicles from southern parts of the city will not be allowed to access northern banks via major bridges such as AV bridge and Sellur new bridge. Public transport and heavy vehicles from areas like Puthunatham Road, Alagarkoil Road and Melur Road will be diverted through alternate routes including Race Course Road, Pandian Hotel junction and KK Nagar.
Traffic from Periyar bus stand towards major arterial roads will be rerouted via Kattabomman statue, South Masi Street, Mahal Road, Keelavasal and KK Nagar Road. Similarly, vehicles from Thathaneri will be diverted through LIC junction, Kulamangalam Road and Sellur 60 Feet Road. Authorities have also imposed parking restrictions along both the northern and southern banks of the Vaigai to prevent congestion.
For devotees attending the event, designated parking facilities have been arranged at multiple locations such as Gokhale Road, YMCA School ground, ITI ground and Al-Ameen School premises. Additional parking will be available at Gandhi Museum grounds, Tamukkam grounds and Race Course area. Limited parking will be permitted along select stretches within the city, while strict restrictions will be enforced in sensitive zones.
Police have urged the public to strictly follow traffic advisories, use designated parking areas and plan their travel in advance to ensure a smooth and hassle-free experience during the festivities.
