CBI begins investigation into Kallakurichi hooch tragedy

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has commenced its probe into the spurious liquor tragedy in Kallakurichi, where 68 people lost their lives and 229 others fell ill after consuming methanol-laced illicit liquor on June 19 last year.
Initially investigated by the CBCID police, the case led to the arrest of 24 individuals, including suppliers and sellers. Among them, 18 were detained under the Goondas Act. Following multiple petitions from opposition parties, including AIADMK and PMK, the Madras High Court transferred the case to the CBI on November 20, 2023.
Tamil Nadu’s appeal against the transfer was dismissed by the Supreme Court on December 17, clearing the way for the CBI to take over. On January 21, a 10-member CBI team began their field investigation by inspecting the house of Kannakutty alias Govindaraj, where the liquor was sold, and other locations in the affected villages, including Madhavacheri.
The CBI’s involvement has intensified focus on the case, which had caused widespread shock across Tamil Nadu.
