Huge honour for Ravi Varman


Noted Tamil cinematographer Ravi Varman has achieved a significant career milestone by gaining membership in the prestigious American Society of Cinematographers (ASC). Known for his exceptional work in films like Ponniyin Selvan and Barfi!, Ravi shared this momentous achievement with his followers, reflecting on his journey from uncertainty to success.

In his announcement, Ravi expressed, “I began my career filled with uncertainty. Life led me to where I am today, and since then, I’ve been carefully planning my steps to discover the true meaning and purpose of my life.” His words capture the essence of his perseverance and dedication to his craft.

Born in Pattukottai, Thanjavur, Ravi Varman was mentored by renowned cinematographer Ravi K Chandran, whose guidance shaped his career. Inspired by legendary painters like Rembrandt and Picasso, Ravi’s deep interest in photography and cinematography grew from an early age. Over the years, he has honed his skills and earned recognition for his visionary work in Indian cinema.

Ravi Varman’s impressive accolades include the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Cinematographer for Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu (2007) and the National Film Award for Best Cinematography for Ponniyin Selvan: I (2024). These honors underscore his remarkable talent and contribution to the art of cinematography.

His cinematic journey began with his debut in the Malayalam film Jalamarmaram (1999), followed by a series of highly successful projects. Ravi’s cinematography has been a defining element in films such as Autograph (2004), Anniyan (2005), Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu (2006), Barfi! (2012), Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela (2013), and the two-part Ponniyin Selvan saga (2022-2023).

In addition to his work as a cinematographer, Ravi Varman also ventured into direction with his film Moscowin Kavery, further showcasing his versatility in the world of filmmaking.
