CM inaugurates Chennai’s first wetland sponge park

Chennai has taken a significant step towards urban water management with the inauguration of its first Wetland Sponge Park by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. This innovative park, designed to tackle waterlogging and urban flooding, was unveiled as part of the city’s sustainable infrastructure initiatives.

The Wetland Sponge Park functions by absorbing excess rainwater, reducing flooding, and replenishing groundwater levels. It features natural water channels, green spaces, and bio-filtration systems to improve water retention and purification. This eco-friendly project is expected to enhance climate resilience in Chennai, which frequently experiences heavy rainfall and water stagnation.

Speaking at the event, CM Stalin emphasized the importance of sustainable urban planning and stated that similar projects would be implemented across the city to combat climate change and improve water conservation. Officials from the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) and environmental experts praised the initiative, calling it a milestone in urban ecology.

The Wetland Sponge Park not only addresses water management but also serves as a recreational space for residents, promoting biodiversity and environmental awareness. With this launch, Chennai sets an example for other cities looking to integrate nature-based solutions into urban development.
