Chennai’s parks, originally built to provide relaxation and happiness, have now become a source of concern due to poor maintenance. In response to residents’ complaints, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has announced a renovation plan for 300 parks across the city, allocating ₹13 crore for the project.
Many parks suffer from lack of cleanliness, damaged footpaths, littered lawns, and broken play equipment, making them unsafe for visitors. Residents are urging GCC to take immediate action.
For instance, My Lady Park in Ward 58 (Royapuram), one of the oldest parks in Chennai, faces issues like unchecked grass growth leading to mosquito breeding, causing inconvenience to residents. Similarly, Thiruvengada Nagar Park in Ward 81 (Ambattur) has broken seesaws, swings, and slides, with no response from officials despite multiple complaints.
A senior GCC official confirmed that the tender process for renovations is underway, and public grievances regarding cleaning and equipment repair will be addressed soon. Residents are hopeful that the restoration will bring parks back to their former glory.
