In a significant move to promote electric vehicle (EV) adoption and support sustainable transportation, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has announced plans to set up EV charging stations at 15 key locations across the city. This initiative aims to expand the public charging infrastructure, making it more convenient for EV users to recharge their vehicles. The project is being undertaken in collaboration with the Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited. Together, they have identified various government-owned lands in all 15 zones of Chennai, including beaches, parks, playgrounds, and other public spaces, as ideal sites for installing the charging stations.
Some of the prominent locations earmarked for these installations include the Egmore National Art Gallery, Magaral Park in Ambattur, Chetpet Eco Park and Bougainvilla Park in Anna Nagar, as well as Semmozhi Park, Nageswara Rao Park, and the Marina Beach Parking area in Teynampet. Other key sites include Besant Nagar and Thiruvanmiyur Beach Parking in Adyar, along with Somasudharam Ground and Corporation Playground in Kodambakkam.
During discussions, Ward 104 Councillor T.V. Shemmozhi requested that the charging facilities be made available free of cost to the public. However, Chennai Mayor R. Priya clarified that the charging service will not be free but reassured that work on the installations will commence shortly.
This initiative reflects Chennai’s commitment to embracing green energy solutions and addressing the growing needs of EV users, thereby contributing to reduced pollution and a cleaner urban environment.
