Chennai is currently facing a surge in fever cases, with doctors attributing the rise to erratic weather conditions marked by heavy night rains and scorching daytime heat. This fluctuation in temperature is weakening immunity levels, making residents more vulnerable to infections.
âMore than 70% of the fever cases we are seeing are viral, primarily Influenza,â said Dr. Priya Mohan, a general physician in T. Nagar. âPatients complain of fatigue, body aches, cough, and high fever. The weather is a key contributor to this spike.â
Adding to concerns is the rise in mosquito breeding due to stagnant freshwater from intermittent rains. âWe are noticing an uptick in Dengue cases, and itâs worrying,â warned Dr. Suresh Kumar, a senior health official from the Greater Chennai Corporation. âIf left untreated, Dengue and Pneumonia can be life-threatening.â
Residents are being urged to take preventive measures seriously. Public health experts advise maintaining clean surroundings, eliminating stagnant water, and ensuring proper mosquito control. âPeople with weaker immunity should focus on a nutritious diet with greens, fruits, and vegetables,â noted Dr. Anitha Ramesh, a city-based nutritionist.
Doctors also recommend regular exercise, handwashing, and mask-wearing to curb infection spread. âWe must be proactive in protecting ourselves. Prevention is far easier than hospitalization,â emphasized Dr. Priya.
With Chennaiâs fluctuating weather expected to continue, authorities are ramping up awareness campaigns, urging citizens to be vigilant, especially in areas prone to mosquito breeding.
