Popular Tamil comedian and actor Robo Shankar passed away yesterday, at the age of 46.
Doctors confirmed that he suffered from a gastrointestinal bleed and multiorgan dysfunction, which led to his sudden demise despite intensive treatment.
Shankar, who had recently battled jaundice and severe weight loss, was admitted to GEM Hospital in Chennai on September 16 in critical condition. He died at 9:05 PM on Thursday.
Condolences have poured in from political leaders and fans. AIADMK leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami described his death as an “irreparable loss,” praising his journey from small stages to cinema.
TVK chief Vijay also paid tribute, remembering him as a talented comedian with a kind heart who lived close to the people.
Senior BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan, in her message, offered her deepest sympathies to the film industry and Robo Shankar’s family. Her statement also included an appeal to artists to prioritize their health.
Nagendran, the BJP’s state president, has expressed his condolences on the death of Robo Shankar.
In his message, he stated that he was shocked to hear the news of the actor’s passing. He praised Robo Shankar for his unique comedic talent, which brought happiness to thousands of fans and helped them forget their worries. Nagendran described Robo Shankar’s death as a great loss not only to the film industry but also to his fans. He offered his deepest condolences to the actor’s family and the film fraternity, and prayed for his soul to rest in peace.
Radikaa Sarathkumar remembered Robo Shankar as a very hardworking person who always kept everyone happy with his humor, calling his death “a great great loss.”
Simran expressed her sadness, calling him “a talent that brought smiles to millions” and offering prayers to his family.
Dhanush, who worked with Robo Shankar in the film Maari, was among the first to visit his home to pay his last respects and offer condolences to his family, including his daughter Indraja.
Raghava Lawrence paid tribute to the late actor, stating that his contribution to entertainment will always be remembered.
Many from the industry who worked with him have recalled his memorable performances and his warm nature.
Robo Shankar was known for his mimicry, timing, and memorable roles in films like Maari, Velaikkaran, Kalakalappu 2, and Singapore Saloon. He is survived by his wife Priyanka, daughter Indraja, and grandson. His passing leaves a huge void in Tamil cinema and comedy.
