The Tamil Nadu government has launched the Palm Seed Plantation Mission-2025, a major green initiative to boost the state’s tree cover and promote sustainable development. Under this mission, more than one crore palm seeds will be planted across all districts, with each village panchayat receiving 5,000 seeds to plant.Since its launch on September 16, 2025, the campaign has gained rapid momentum, with over 72 lakh palm seeds already planted in 38 districts by October 23. This effort is coordinated by the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Forests, Green Tamil Nadu Mission, volunteers, district administrations, and NGOs.
Every plantation is digitally documented with photos and geo-tagged location via the Udhavi App, ensuring transparency and long-term care of new trees. Participants will also get recognition certificates from the government for their contributions.
Palm trees, Tamil Nadu’s official state tree, offer several benefits. They help conserve groundwater, prevent soil and coastal erosion, thrive in tough climates, and support the rural economy as every part of the tree provides livelihood options. Their long lifespan means they contribute to carbon sequestration and ecological balance for over 100 years.
Tamil Nadu aims to raise its green cover to 33% of total land area, making palm trees a cornerstone of climate resilience, biodiversity protection, and sustainable practices.
Citizens are encouraged to collect fallen palm seeds, plant them near water bodies, and register their work on the Udhavi App to be part of this environmental drive.
