Chennai and its suburbs experienced moderate rainfall on Tuesday after the sky remained cloudy from the early hours, bringing pleasant weather but also causing traffic snarls on key stretches.
A lower-level atmospheric circulation over south Tamil Nadu and adjoining areas has triggered light to moderate rain in parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, including Chennai.
The Regional Meteorological Centre had forecast a generally cloudy sky for the city with chances of light to moderate showers accompanied by thunder and lightning in some areas.
From around 7 a.m., several neighbourhoods in Chennai began receiving light drizzle which later intensified into moderate showers in many places. Areas such as Adyar, Mylapore, Anna Salai, Triplicane, Egmore, OMR, Sholinganallur, Karapakkam, Kumaran Nagar and other localities recorded steady rain. The sudden spells led to traffic congestion along the OMR stretch as vehicle movement slowed down in the wet conditions.
The rainfall kept temperatures in check, with the city seeing a cool, overcast day and high humidity levels due to persistent cloud cover.
