To improve suburban rail connectivity and manage increasing passenger demand, Southern Railway will begin construction of a fourth railway line between Tambaram and Chengalpattu by the end of January. The busy Chennai Beach–Tambaram–Chengalpattu corridor currently runs on three tracks, handling more than 500 EMU suburban trains daily. With the opening of the Kilambakkam Bus Terminus, passenger traffic at Tambaram and Chengalpattu stations has surged, highlighting the need for additional infrastructure.
Approved by the Union Government, the ₹713-crore project will add a 30 km fourth line along the corridor. Officials say the new track will allow 100 additional suburban trains to operate, easing congestion and improving travel efficiency for commuters.
A Southern Railway spokesperson said, “The fourth line will strengthen Chennai’s suburban rail network, reduce overcrowding, and provide better services to daily passengers.”
Construction is expected to be completed in phases, with commuters benefiting from improved rail connectivity across the region.
