The recent unrest in Bangladesh, erupting in mid-December 2025 following the death of Inqilab Moncho spokesperson Osman Hadi, has plunged the nation into chaos marked by riots, arson, and targeted violence against minorities. Amid the turmoil triggered by Hadi’s assassination—allegedly by Awami League affiliates who fled to India—a Hindu youth, Dipu Chandra Das, was brutally lynched in Mymensingh, his body beaten, tied to a tree, and set ablaze over blasphemy allegations.

This incident underscores a disturbing pattern of anti-Hindu aggression, amplified by anti-India rhetoric from hardline groups demanding the closure of Indian diplomatic missions. India’s perspective views these killings as part of a systematic persecution of Hindus under the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government, echoing earlier condemnations of similar atrocities like the April 2025 murder of leader Bhabesh Chandra Roy.New Delhi has summoned Bangladesh’s high commissioner, closed visa centers in Rajshahi and Khulna due to threats, and witnessed mass protests in cities like New Delhi and Bhopal, reflecting public outrage over the impunity enjoyed by perpetrators.
The Indian government rightly demands that Dhaka protect all minorities without excuses, highlighting how such violence strains bilateral ties and exposes the fragility of Bangladesh’s transitional democracy. While the UN has urged calm and condemned the political violence post-Hadi’s death, its statement falls short of addressing the communal dimensions, particularly the Hindu killings. From India’s standpoint, stronger international intervention is imperative to hold the Yunus regime accountable, prevent further mob justice, and ensure the safe return of refugees fleeing persecution. Failure to act risks escalating regional instability, with India compelled to prioritize its border communities’ security amid Dhaka’s internal fires.
