The AIADMK staged a dramatic walkout from the Tamil Nadu Assembly on Thursday after party members were denied permission to speak on pressing farmers’ issues, escalating the opposition’s protest against the ruling DMK government.
AIADMK legislators sought permission to raise concerns about the agrarian crisis, including issues such as crop prices, farm loan waivers and drought‑related distress in several districts. However, the Speaker did not allow the discussion, prompting AIADMK members to leave the Assembly in protest, alleging that the government is ignoring the plight of farmers.
AIADMK leaders accused the DMK administration of deliberately stifling democratic debate on matters affecting the agricultural community, which they said directly impacts millions of rural families across the State.
Party spokespersons said the walkout was a symbolic move to highlight what they described as the government’s failure to address farmers’ grievances and the Assembly’s reluctance to entertain opposition scrutiny on key policy shortcomings.
The incident marks a fresh flashpoint in the ongoing political tussle between the AIADMK and the ruling DMK, with the opposition intensifying its criticism ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
AIADMK leaders maintained that they will continue to press for a proper forum to discuss farmers’ concerns and called on the government to engage constructively rather than suppress dissent.
