The Greater Chennai Corporation has announced that the deadline for including a child’s name in a birth certificate has been extended until September 26, following an order issued by the Tamil Nadu government. As per existing rules, birth registration must be completed within 21 days of birth, and the birth certificate serves as an official proof of identity and citizenship. If the child’s name is not mentioned at the time of initial registration, parents are usually allowed to add it within 12 months free of cost, or within 15 years by paying a prescribed late fee.
However, many parents who failed to include the name even within the 15-year limit faced difficulties in updating records. To address this issue and reduce public inconvenience, the government has now provided a special relaxation, permitting name inclusion even after 15 years. This one-time opportunity will remain valid until the newly announced deadline.
Parents or guardians seeking to add the child’s name can submit applications at the Corporation’s Birth and Death Registration Offices or respective Zonal Offices. Applicants must provide supporting documents such as a copy of the birth certificate, school or college records, Aadhaar card, voter ID, ration card and other relevant identity proofs.
Officials have urged eligible families to make use of this extended window before the September 26 deadline.
