Chennai, Mar 3:
The judgment in the high‑profile Sathankulam custodial deaths case — involving the deaths of a father and son while in police custody — is scheduled to be delivered on March 23 by the Additional District and Sessions Court in Madurai.
The case dates back to June 19, 2020, when P. Jeyaraj and his son J. Benniks were arrested by police in Sathankulam (Thoothukudi district). They later died in custody, sparking widespread outrage and protests across the state over alleged police brutality and custodial torture.
Ten police personnel were arrested in connection with the incident, and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took over the inquiry. Court proceedings have examined extensive evidence, including allegations that efforts were made to conceal evidence after the deaths.
After nearly six years of legal proceedings, the court is now poised to pronounce its verdict, a moment closely watched by activists, legal observers, and families seeking justice.
