The Greater Chennai Corporation has accelerated several civic infrastructure projects across the city ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, focusing on improving roads, public amenities and basic services in multiple neighbourhoods.
Officials said a number of development works — including road relaying, stormwater drain construction, park upgrades and improvements to public infrastructure — are being taken up simultaneously across different zones of the city. The civic body has instructed contractors and engineers to speed up ongoing works so that residents can benefit from the improvements before the polls.
As part of the initiative, several important roads and bus-route corridors are being upgraded with better pedestrian facilities, traffic safety measures and improved drainage systems. The corporation has also planned infrastructure improvements on around 15 major bus routes, aimed at enhancing traffic flow and pedestrian safety in busy areas.
Civic officials said the works are part of routine urban development programmes and are intended to improve infrastructure and service delivery across the city. The projects include road widening, installation of safety features, and strengthening of public utilities to address long-standing civic issues faced by residents.
According to officials, special focus is also being given to flood mitigation works, including the completion of stormwater drains in low-lying areas that frequently face waterlogging during the monsoon. Efforts are also underway to improve public parks, playgrounds and community facilities to enhance the quality of life for residents.
Urban planners note that such infrastructure upgrades could help reduce congestion, improve road safety and strengthen Chennai’s overall urban mobility network. With several projects moving at a faster pace, civic authorities say the aim is to ensure that essential development works are completed efficiently while addressing the needs of the city’s growing population.
