Chennai, Apr 18:
A shortage of auto LPG has disrupted transport services in Chennai, leaving thousands of autorickshaw drivers facing long delays and uncertainty over fuel availability.
The city has nearly 40,000 LPG-run autorickshaws, but only 38 fuel stations to cater to them, creating a significant mismatch between demand and supply. As a result, drivers have been forced to queue for hours at the few operational outlets.
Long lines have been reported in several parts of the city, with some drivers waiting up to four to six hours to refill. In many cases, queues have stretched for long distances, severely affecting their daily schedules and earnings.
The situation has worsened as several private LPG outlets remain shut due to lack of stock, increasing dependence on a limited number of public sector stations.
Drivers say the shortage has hit their livelihoods hard, as time spent waiting for fuel has reduced their working hours and income. Many have urged authorities to take immediate steps to improve supply and expand infrastructure.
With thousands relying on LPG for daily operations, the ongoing shortage has not only impacted drivers but also affected commuters, highlighting the need for a more stable and accessible fuel supply system in the city.
