Chennai, May 14:
In a major step to curb underage drinking, TASMAC has issued strict instructions that alcoholic beverages must not be sold to anyone below 21 years of age in Tamil Nadu.
The directive comes amid rising concerns over increasing alcohol consumption among youngsters and students. Authorities have made it clear that this rule must be followed without exception, and any violation will invite strict disciplinary action against staff.
To enforce the rule, TASMAC employees have been instructed to verify the age of customers before selling liquor. If there is any doubt, staff must check valid identity proof such as Aadhaar card, driving licence, or voter ID before completing the sale.
Additionally, all outlets are required to display clear signboards stating that liquor will not be sold to persons under 21. Monitoring teams and inspection squads will conduct surprise checks to ensure compliance, and violations could lead to suspension or removal from service.
This move is part of a broader effort by the Tamil Nadu government to regulate alcohol access and promote public welfare. Recent actions have also included the closure of several TASMAC outlets near schools, temples, and public places.
Overall, the new rule signals a clear policy direction — protecting youth and tightening enforcement in liquor sales across Tamil Nadu.
