Chennai, June 2:
An IIT-Madras research group has called for a strategic push to create two million high-value Extended Reality (XR) jobs in India by 2030, as the sector witnesses rapid growth with over 1,000 startups and SMEs.
In a report analysing Tamil Nadu’s AVGC-XR Policy 2026, researchers urged a shift from a service-driven model to original IP creation, advanced R&D, and hardware manufacturing. Key recommendations include developing indigenous XR hardware, establishing a state-level “TN-XR Cloud” for GPU access, and introducing specialised academic programmes and fellowships.
The report also proposed a “50-50 workforce” model to ensure half the jobs are in high-value areas like AI-driven immersive tech and innovation. It highlighted opportunities in healthcare, education, defence, and manufacturing, while stressing the need for policy frameworks on AI-generated content and metaverse governance.
The study noted that a strong XR ecosystem could boost economic growth, enhance skill development, and position India as a global leader in deep-tech innovation.
