Chennai, June 3:
Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has announced that the Phase-2 Metro Rail project has achieved 52.55% overall completion across its three key corridors.
The ₹63,246-crore project spans 116.1 km and includes Corridor 3 (Madhavaram–Siruseri, 45.4 km), Corridor 4 (Lighthouse–Poonamallee, 26.1 km) and Corridor 5 (Madhavaram–Sholinganallur, 44.6 km). The network will have 118 stations, including 43 underground stations covering 42.6 km.
Construction began in November 2020, with tunnelling works starting in October 2022. Tunnel work has been completed in key areas such as Adyar, Kodambakkam, Panagal Park, Royapettah, Mylapore and Mandaveli.
Elevated corridor works are progressing steadily and are expected to be completed by 2027, while underground sections are targeted for 2028. Key elevated stretches, including Poonamallee–Porur–Vadapalani, have been completed, with track-laying currently underway in multiple sections.
Officials said the first Phase-2 Metro service is expected to begin soon on the Poonamallee–Porur–Vadapalani stretch. The project is set to significantly enhance urban mobility, reduce traffic congestion, and improve connectivity to key residential, commercial and IT hubs across Chennai.
