Mullanpur, June 9:
India produced a commanding all-round performance to defeat Afghanistan by an innings and 300 runs in the one-off Test at Mullanpur on Monday, wrapping up the contest inside three days with clinical dominance in both batting and bowling.
After posting a massive first-innings total of 564/8, India put Afghanistan under immediate pressure, forcing them to follow on after bundling them out for 152. The visitors fared no better the second time, collapsing for 112 as India’s bowlers maintained relentless control throughout the match.
Debutant spinner Manav Suthar emerged as the standout performer, claiming a brilliant 6/33 in the first innings to dismantle Afghanistan’s batting line-up. Washington Sundar complemented him with a four-wicket haul in the second innings, ensuring there was no escape route for the opposition.
India’s pace attack also played a crucial supporting role, with Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna striking at key moments to sustain pressure and secure early breakthroughs.
India captain Shubman Gill termed it a “complete win,” praising the team’s collective execution and clarity in decision-making, including the timely enforcement of the follow-on that helped close out the match efficiently.
Gill also highlighted the depth of India’s spin resources, noting the value of giving young bowlers like Suthar extended opportunities to gain experience in Test conditions.
Manav Suthar, adjudged Player of the Match, called his debut “unreal” and credited consistency and patience as the key lessons from his maiden appearance at the highest level.
With this dominant victory, India wrapped up the contest emphatically, reinforcing their strength in both batting depth and a versatile bowling attack.
