Chennai, June 25:
Amid mounting speculation over a possible leadership change in the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC), senior leaders from the state unit have stepped up consultations with the party high command in New Delhi. On Wednesday, ministers Rajesh Kumar and P. Viswanathan met Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, sparking fresh discussions within political circles.
The meeting assumes significance as rumours continue to swirl about an imminent reshuffle in the TNCC leadership. While there has been no official statement from the party, insiders suggest that the interaction was part of a broader consultative process initiated by the Congress high command.
Sources indicate that the leadership has been engaging with multiple senior leaders from Tamil Nadu to assess the organisational structure and explore ways to strengthen the party ahead of upcoming political challenges.
The timing of these consultations is critical. With local body elections on the horizon and the 2029 Lok Sabha polls in the long-term view, the Congress appears keen to recalibrate its strategy in Tamil Nadu. Strengthening the state unit, both in terms of leadership and grassroots mobilisation, is said to be a top priority.
Discussions during the meeting reportedly revolved around the current political climate in Tamil Nadu, organisational effectiveness, and the need for a dynamic leadership approach to expand the party’s influence.
Fueling the speculation further, P. Viswanathan had recently hinted at a possible change in TNCC leadership while speaking to reporters in Madurai. He stated that a decision could be expected soon, but emphasised that the final call would rest with the party’s national leadership.
His remarks have added weight to ongoing discussions within Congress circles, where several names are reportedly being considered for the TNCC president’s post.
Despite the growing buzz, Congress leaders have maintained a cautious stance, reiterating that any decision regarding the TNCC leadership will be taken only after thorough consultations. The party high command, led by Mallikarjun Kharge, is expected to weigh multiple factors before making a final announcement.
The developments point to a possible shift in the Congress party’s approach in Tamil Nadu, as it looks to revitalise its state unit and improve its electoral prospects. Whether this results in a leadership overhaul or a continuation of the current structure remains to be seen.
