Chennai, July 1:

In a major development in the ₹23 lakh job fraud case linked to the transport department, former DMK Transport Minister Sivasankar appeared before the Central Crime Branch (CCB) in Chennai for inquiry.

The case pertains to allegations of cheating by promising government jobs in the transport department. The CCB had earlier arrested Ilanchezhiyan, a resident of Ariyalur, on June 24 in connection with the fraud. Based on a complaint filed by a retired Assistant Sub-Inspector Srinivasan, the FIR included references to Sivasankar’s alleged involvement in the case.

Following this, the Central Crime Branch issued a summons directing the former minister to appear for questioning. Acting on the summons, Sivasankar appeared at the CCB office functioning at the Commissioner’s Office in Vepery on Wednesday morning. Officials are expected to record his statement as part of the ongoing investigation.

Meanwhile, the CCB had moved the Egmore Court seeking police custody of the prime accused Ilanchezhiyan for further interrogation. The court, after hearing the petition, granted permission to keep him in police custody until July 6. Police have since begun detailed questioning to uncover further links and details in the case.

Investigations are currently underway, with officials examining the extent of the alleged fraud and the involvement of other individuals connected to the case.

India has defended the international anti-terrorism funding organisation against attacks on it by Pakistan saying it was motivated by fear of scrutiny. Calling the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) “an indispensable pillar of the global counterterrorism financing and anti-money laundering architecture”, India’s Permanent Representative P Harish said on Monday, “Attempts to question its credibility often reflect fear of scrutiny rather than genuine process-related concerns”.
