Chennai, July 24:
The Tamil Nadu government will establish model food streets in cities including Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchy, Salem and Tirupur to standardise food handling practices and improve hygiene, Health Minister KG Arunraj said. The initiative will feature uniform stainless-steel food carts along with basic amenities such as drinking water and toilets to boost public confidence in street food.
Launching a training camp for over 1,500 vendors in Tiruvallur, the minister said nearly 50,000 street food vendors have been registered across the state under food safety norms. He added that the focus would now shift to ensuring consistent hygiene standards, in line with directions from Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay. Authorities also warned of strict action against the use of banned substances, while distributing food safety certificates and equipment to vendors as part of the initiative.
