New Delhi, Oct 1:
The Union Cabinet has approved the Green Energy Corridor Phase-III (GEC-III) scheme with a total outlay of ₹1,86,405 crore to strengthen intra-state power transmission networks and facilitate the evacuation of up to 135 GW of renewable energy across States and Union Territories by 2032-33.
The scheme includes ₹1,36,378 crore for developing intra-state transmission systems and ₹50,000 crore for deploying 50 GWh of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). The Centre will provide ₹54,082 crore as financial support, which the government said would help offset transmission charges and keep power costs down for consumers.
The battery storage component is aimed at addressing the intermittent nature of renewable power, transmission congestion and peak-hour curtailment, while enabling electricity generated from renewable sources to meet demand during non-solar hours. The storage systems can be installed at renewable energy generation sites or other locations important for grid flexibility.
