Chennai : Sainikesh Ravichandran, a 21-year-old from Coimbatore, has joined the paramilitary forces in Ukraine to fight against Russia.
The aerospace engineering student, who was twice rejected by the Indian Army because of his height, is now part of the Georgian National Legion paramilitary unit comprising volunteers.
Following an alert about his decision, intelligence officials of the Centre and State have launched a detailed probe and visited his residence at Subramaniyampalayam, near Thudiyalur.
According to reports, his family had attempted to convince him to return home, but he refused.
In 2018, Sainikesh went to Ukraine to study at the National Aerospace University in Kharkiv. He was to complete the course by July 2022.
Due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, his family had lost communication with Sainikesh. After seeking the Embassy’s help, they were able to contact Sainikesh and pleaded him to return, but he turned down their request.
Sainikesh last visited India in July 2021 and stayed for about 1.5 months.
