Chennai’s ever-expanding metro network network is set to receive a significant boost in connectivity with the introduction of a new station at St. Thomas Mount as part of Phase II of the Chennai Metro Rail (CMRL) project. This development comes as a result of a strategic decision to overcome technical difficulties and provide a more seamless commuting experience for the city’s residents and visitors. Originally, the plan for Phase II was to utilize the existing St. Thomas Mount station from Phase I, a decision aimed at optimizing costs. However, due to unforeseen technical challenges, CMRL has opted for a revised plan that will see the construction of a new station adjacent to the existing one. One of the key highlights of this revised plan is the integration of the old and new stations through a connecting tube at the concourse level. This innovation will enable passengers to transfer effortlessly between the two corridors, fostering enhanced connectivity and convenience. With approximately 5,500 commuters currently using the existing St. Thomas Mount station, this development is poised to benefit a substantial number of people.
