In the aftermath of the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy that claimed the lives of over 35 individuals, MDMK General Secretary Vaiko has called for the implementation of complete prohibition in Tamil Nadu. This appeal comes as part of a broader demand for stringent action against those involved in the sale of illicit liquor.
Vaiko’s statement follows the deaths in Karunapuram, Kallakurichi district, where victims consumed methanol-laced arrack. Expressing his condolences to the bereaved families, Vaiko also urged the medical community to do everything possible to save those still battling the effects of the poisonous alcohol in hospitals.
Recalling similar tragedies in recent years, including fatalities in Chengalpattu, Kallakurichi, and Thanjavur districts, Vaiko emphasized the recurring nature of such incidents. “Again deaths have occurred in Kallakurichi. The government should curb hooch sales with an iron fist,” he stated.
Vaiko also pointed to alleged corruption within the police force as a contributing factor to the persistence of illicit liquor sales. “Due to the presence of ‘some black sheep’ in the police department, hooch sales and deaths due to it are not stopping,” he alleged.
The MDMK has long advocated for total prohibition in Tamil Nadu as a solution to the problem of illicit liquor. Vaiko reiterated this stance, urging the state government to take decisive steps towards this goal. “The MDMK is fighting to ensure complete prohibition in the state,” he declared, calling for a gradual shutdown of wine shops as part of this process.
Vaiko’s statement underscores the need for comprehensive measures to address both the supply and demand sides of the illicit liquor problem. By advocating for strict enforcement against hooch sellers and promoting prohibition, Vaiko and the MDMK are pushing for a long-term solution to prevent further tragedies.
