The Principal Sessions Court in Chennai has postponed the framing of charges against former Tamil Nadu minister V. Senthilbalaji in the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) case. The decision came after Senthilbalaji’s counsel requested a delay, citing ongoing legal proceedings in the Madras High Court.During the hearing, Principal Sessions Judge S. Alli considered a petition filed by Senthilbalaji, seeking to defer the framing of charges. The counsel for the former minister argued that a petition challenging the dismissal of his discharge plea in the PMLA case is currently pending before the High Court. However, the petition has not yet been numbered, leading the defense to request additional time to prepare and advance their arguments.
After considering the request, Judge Alli decided to postpone the framing of charges, rescheduling the proceedings for August 7, 2024.
In connection with the case, Senthilbalaji, who has been in judicial custody, was produced before the court via video conferencing from Puzhal Central Prison, Chennai. As his custody period ended on August 2, the judge extended his judicial custody until August 7.
The PMLA case against Senthilbalaji stems from allegations of money laundering during his tenure as a minister in the Tamil Nadu government. The case has been closely watched, as it is part of a broader crackdown on corruption by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
The postponement of the framing of charges is seen as a temporary reprieve for Senthilbalaji, who is currently battling multiple legal challenges. However, the rescheduled proceedings on August 7 will be crucial in determining the next steps in this high-profile case.
