The Tamil Nadu government has officially created a new taluk, Kolathur, by bifurcating the Ayanavaram taluk in Chennai. The establishment of Kolathur taluk is aimed at improving access to essential services, including social security pensions, revenue documents, and various certificates for local residents.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin inaugurated the Kolathur taluk office on Monday in G.K.M. Colony. The office will initially operate from this location until it relocates to a permanent building on Paper Mills Road. With the introduction of Kolathur, Chennai now has a total of 17 taluks.
According to the government order, the newly formed Kolathur taluk will encompass the revenue villages of Kolathur, Siruvallur, and Peravallur. The Ayanavaram taluk will continue to include the areas of Konnur, Malligmaicheri, Ayanavaram, and Chinnasembarambakkam. The Kolathur taluk will be part of the Central Chennai Revenue Division and fall under the Kolathur assembly constituency.
The government has sanctioned 42 positions for the Kolathur taluk, including tahsildars, deputy tahsildars, and revenue inspectors. These officials have already assumed their roles, and the process of segregating old-age pensioners within the new taluk has commenced.
This restructuring is reminiscent of the administrative expansion undertaken in January 2018, during the previous AIADMK regime, which saw several taluks added from Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts into Chennai. The latest reorganization is expected to streamline administrative processes and enhance the delivery of government services in the region.
The creation of Kolathur taluk is a significant step towards decentralizing administrative services and providing better access to essential resources for Chennai’s residents. The new taluk aims to address local needs more effectively and improve overall service efficiency in the area.
