The monsoon season brings much-needed relief from the heat, but it also increases the risk of various diseases, especially in regions like Tamil Nadu. Waterborne diseases, mosquito-borne illnesses, and other infections become more prevalent during this time. Here are some essential tips to help you stay healthy and prevent monsoon-related diseases:
According to Dr Ravi, ‘Regular handwashing with soap, especially before meals and after using the restroom, is crucial. Ensure children follow this habit.’
He says, ‘Keep your home clean and free from stagnant water, which can become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Dispose of garbage properly and clean water storage containers regularly. Always boil drinking water or use water purifiers to eliminate harmful bacteria and viruses’
Speaking to News Today, Dr Arivazhagan, who runs his clinic in Nanganallur says, ‘Refrain from drinking water from unknown sources or outside establishments. Carry your own water bottle when going out.’
‘Apply mosquito repellent creams, use mosquito nets while sleeping, and ensure windows and doors have screens to prevent mosquitoes from entering.
Eliminate Breeding Grounds: Regularly inspect your surroundings for stagnant water in flower pots, coolers, and other containers. Empty them to prevent mosquito breeding.’
He adds,’ Eat Healthy and Hygienic Food
Avoid Street Food: Street food can often be contaminated, especially during the monsoon. Opt for home-cooked meals made with fresh ingredients. Ensure that fruits and vegetables are thoroughly washed before consumption. Soaking them in salt water for a few minutes can help remove germs.’
For cooking and cleaning, use only safe and clean water. If thereās any doubt about the water quality, treat it by boiling or using chlorine tablets, he winds up.
