Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) state president K. Selvaperunthagai has initiated efforts to revitalize the party by holding discussions with cadres and mid-level leaders, focusing on revamping both district and state committees. One key policy is that second family members will only be eligible for party tickets after five years of dedicated party work.Selvaperunthagai has been actively engaging with district presidents to gather their inputs on this overhaul. His strategy is to appoint dynamic and committed workers as office-bearers, aiming to strengthen the party’s leadership at grassroots levels.
The TN Congress, despite having 18 legislators in the state assembly, has no representation in the DMK-led state cabinet, which has fueled tensions at local levels. Some senior Congress leaders are advocating for greater independence from DMK, even exploring the possibility of collaborating with AIADMK, if necessary. Selvaperunthagai emphasized that the focus is on restructuring the party to restore its influence in Tamil Nadu.
The TNCC’s state executive committee passed a resolution empowering Selvaperunthagai to immediately proceed with the revamp and called for the reinstatement of the ‘Kamarajar’ rule, a significant political statement given the Congress’ absence from power in the state since 1969.
