In a shocking turn of events, Sundar, a 22-year-old undergraduate political science student at Presidency College, succumbed to injuries sustained during an attack by a group of students from Pachaiyappa’s College. The incident occurred last Friday at the Chennai suburban terminal (Moore Market Complex) and has sent ripples of concern throughout the city’s educational institutions.
Following the violent altercation, Sundar was rushed to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH), located just across from the railway station, where he received emergency medical treatment. Unfortunately, he passed away early Wednesday morning, prompting authorities to intensify their investigation into the matter.
Five students from Pachaiyappa’s College—identified as Eshwar, Chandru, Hariprasad, Kamaleshwar, and Yuvaraj—have since been booked on murder charges. This tragic incident is part of a troubling pattern of student violence, particularly between rival colleges.
In light of the escalating tensions, DSP K. Ramesh of the Government Railway Police (GRP) addressed the situation on Tuesday, urging students to channel their competitive spirit into academics and sports rather than engaging in violent confrontations. “It is not justifiable to beat up a fellow student and hospitalize him,” he remarked, stressing the importance of resolving conflicts peacefully. He further emphasized that under new laws, evidence such as CCTV footage could suffice for legal action, reducing the reliance on eyewitness accounts.
The incident has sparked outrage and calls for greater measures to ensure student safety on campuses. As authorities continue to investigate the case, the community is left to grapple with the tragic loss of a young life and the underlying issues that led to such violence.
