The 2024 northeast monsoon is expected to start with a bang, as the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, has issued an orange alert for 11 districts in Tamil Nadu, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall between October 12 and 15.The low-pressure area over Lakshadweep and parts of the Arabian Sea is predicted to intensify into a depression, triggering intense rains across Kanniyakumari, Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Thoothukudi, and Tenkasi. These districts are expected to witness heavy to very heavy downpours, with the weather office urging residents to remain vigilant.
In addition to the orange alert, the RMC has also issued a heavy rainfall warning for Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Coimbatore’s ghat areas, Tirupur, Pudukkottai, Sivaganga, Tiruchy, Cuddalore, Kallakurichi, Villupuram, Theni, Dindigul, and The Nilgiris. The remaining areas of Tamil Nadu are likely to experience light to moderate rainfall in the coming days.
Chennai and its suburbs, which have already been receiving intermittent light to moderate rains in recent days, are forecasted to continue experiencing nighttime thunderstorms over the next 48 hours.
Due to the approaching weather system, fishermen in south Tamil Nadu, particularly in the Gulf of Mannar and Comorin areas, have been strongly advised to avoid venturing into the sea. Squally winds with speeds ranging from 35 kmph to 45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph, are likely to pose hazards in these regions until next week.
The intensifying monsoon activity underscores the need for preparedness, particularly in coastal and vulnerable districts, as the state braces for heavy rainfall in the days ahead.
