The Coimbatore city police have interrogated Omkar Balaji, the son of Indu Makkal Katchi (IMK) founder Arjun Sampath, following his controversial remarks about the editor of the Tamil magazine Nakkheeran. Balaji, who is the youth wing president of the IMK, allegedly threatened to “cut off the tongue” of Gopal, the editor of Nakkheeran, during a protest on October 27.The protest was organized by the IMK to condemn an article published by Nakkheeran about the Isha Yoga Centre. In his speech during the protest, Balaji made the threatening remark against Gopal, which prompted a formal complaint from a DMK worker.
Based on the complaint, the Race Course police in Coimbatore registered a case against Balaji for his inflammatory statement. The police summoned him for questioning, during which he was let off without arrest. However, Balaji had moved the Madras High Court seeking anticipatory bail, in anticipation of potential arrest. The court is scheduled to hear his bail plea on November 13.
