Renowned Carnatic vocalist T.M. Krishna described Carnatic music as “the melody of India’s gift to the world,” during his speech at the inauguration of the 98th annual conference and concert series of The Music Academy in Mylapore, Chennai, yesterday.
At the event, T.M. Krishna was presented with the prestigious M.S. Subbulakshmi Award by former judge Muralidhar. The 15-day festival, set to run until January 1, will feature over 80 concerts and dance performances.
Accepting the honohr, Krishna said:
“Receiving an award named after M.S. Subbulakshmi is a blessing for a singer like me. This recognition brings with it a greater sense of responsibility. While learning and practicing music, we don’t fully realize what it has to offer. But when one masters it completely, the place that music creates for us in life is unforgettable.”
He further elaborated on the transformative power of music, stating:
“Carnatic music has given me a special place in the hearts of people. Just as an artist derives joy from delighting audiences, their applause creates a unique melody in a musician’s ears. As many artists have noted, the ragas of Carnatic music are truly India’s gift to the world. Each of us carries a raga within us.”
Krishna also noted that music offers peace and healing, becoming a balm for broken spirits. The event also included discussions on the theme “Reflections of Ragas in Indian Art,” where various participants will present essays on the subject.
Speaking at the event, former judge Muralidhar said: “To talk about music is an endless endeavor. The mental and physical peace it brings cannot be replicated by anything else in the world. Today, music serves as a healer of pain and a medicine to control emotions.”
