Palamedu, Jan 15: The renowned Palamedu Jallikattu commenced with great excitement today, marking an integral part of the Pongal festivities.
Following the successful Avaniyapuram Jallikattu held yesterday (January 14) in Madurai district, the celebrated Palamedu Jallikattu began today (January 15) on the occasion of Mattu Pongal. The event was inaugurated by Minister Murthy, who flagged off the proceedings.
Health Checks and Preparations
A medical team of 120 members was deployed to examine the bulls and tamers before the event. The team ensured the health and fitness of the bulls, verified registration numbers, and inspected the size of their horns.
During the inspection, a power outage briefly disrupted the activities, leading to minor scuffles between the police and the bull tamers. The situation was brought under control after the police intervened with light baton action.
The Palamedu Jallikattu will feature multiple rounds with a total of 1,200 bulls participating. 900 tamers have been authorized to compete. To ensure safety and order, 2,500 police personnel have been deployed for security duties.
The event offers attractive prizes for both the best bulls and tamers:
First Prize for the Best Bull: A tractor, sponsored by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.
First Prize for the Best Tamer: A luxury car, sponsored by Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin.
Second Prize: A native cow with a calf for the best bull and a bike for the best tamer.
In addition, prizes such as gold coins, TVs, refrigerators, bicycles, and even egg baskets will be awarded to other participants.
Palamedu Jallikattu continues to showcase the rich tradition and competitive spirit of Tamil Nadu’s heritage, bringing together skill, bravery, and festivity in a grand celebration.
