State BJP President K. Annamalai has criticized the ruling DMK government for its decision to privatize the Chief Minister’s Breakfast Scheme, urging the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) to continue involving Amma Unavagam canteens in preparing meals.
In a statement on Tuesday, Annamalai emphasized that the breakfast scheme, which provides nutritious meals to over 65,000 students across more than 350 schools in Chennai, is vital for promoting education and welfare. However, he alleged that privatisation would compromise the scheme’s purpose.
“The Amma Unavagams have been a lifeline for thousands, offering not just affordable food but also a stable source of income for workers. Despite allocating ₹21 crore for their development, the DMK government is now trying to privatize the scheme, prioritizing private interests over public welfare,” Annamalai argued.
He accused the DMK of using the GCC and schoolchildren as tools in political maneuvering, calling their actions “a stark reminder of their preference for drama over governance.” He urged the government to prioritize the welfare of students and workers by retaining the current operational model.
