Chennai, Sept 1 :

Tea and coffee prices in Chennai have gone up for the first time in three years, according to the Tea Shop Traders’ Association. The new rates came into effect today, marking the end of a long-standing period of price stability for these much-loved beverages.

A regular cup of tea, which previously cost ₹12, is now priced at ₹15. Coffee prices have seen a sharp increase too, rising from ₹15 to ₹20 per cup. The association explained that the hike was necessary due to escalating costs of milk, tea and coffee powder, and transportation, which have significantly impacted shop owners.

The price rise has not been limited to just tea and coffee. Other drinks and packaged items have also seen a jump. A cup of milk is now ₹15, while lemon tea costs ₹15. Special tea is being sold at ₹20. Beverages like Boost and Horlicks have been priced at ₹25. For takeaways, a parcel cup of tea costs ₹45, and a parcel cup of coffee has gone up to ₹60.

The sudden hike has taken many Chennai residents by surprise, particularly those who depend on these beverages as part of their daily routine. While several tea shops have already implemented the new prices, some outlets are opting to introduce the changes gradually in an effort to reduce the impact on their loyal customers.
