The Soorasamharam festival was celebrated with great fervor at the Sri Mutharamman Temple in Kulasekarapattinam, Thoothukudi district, as part of the Dussehra festivities. The festival began on September 23 with the flag hoisting ceremony and concluded on October 2 with the symbolic Soorasamharam, marking the victory of good over evil.The event drew over 10 lakh devotees from across South India. The midnight Soorasamharam on the beach near the temple reenacted Goddess Durga’s triumph over the demon Mahishasura, with devotees dressed as deities and mythological characters participating in the rituals. Traditional performances such as Karakattam and Silambattam added to the festive spirit.
To ensure safety, the district administration deployed more than 3,500 police personnel, with drones and CCTV monitoring crowd movements. Special teams assisted in maintaining order and helping devotees.
The Mutharamman Temple, over 300 years old, holds deep historical and cultural significance. Devotees believe that participating in the Soorasamharam brings blessings and fulfills vows. The festival remains a vibrant celebration of faith and culture, attracting thousands of participants every year.
