In a disturbing development, human excreta was reportedly found mixed in an overhead water tank at a Dalit settlement in Amachiyapuram village near Vadipatti in Madurai district on Tuesday, sparking outrage and tension in the area.The incident bears a chilling resemblance to the Vengaivayal case in Pudukottai district two years ago, where human waste was found in a water tank supplying a Dalit colony, triggering a statewide uproar and legal action.
Residents of Amachiyapuram, which is predominantly a Scheduled Caste settlement, complained of a foul smell in the drinking water over the past few days. Following their complaints, officials inspected the tank and found traces of human waste. The water was immediately drained, and the tank was thoroughly cleaned.
Madurai Superintendent of Police B.K. Arvind has ordered a detailed investigation based on intelligence inputs. Initial police findings, however, suggest that it might be unlikely for outsiders to have entered the village, and that the foul odour could have also resulted from a fresh coat of paint on the tank.
DMK MLA A. Venkatesan from Sholavandan visited the spot to assess the situation and assured the villagers of swift action. Meanwhile, several SC/ST organisations condemned the incident, calling it a continuation of caste-based discrimination, and demanded stringent measures from both the Union and State governments to prevent such atrocities.
The shocking recurrence of such incidents has reignited public concern over the safety, dignity, and rights of marginalized communities in Tamil Nadu.
