The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has announced a ban on new pet licences for Pit Bull and Rottweiler breeds effective December 20, 2025, citing public safety concerns amid rising incidents of dog attacks.

Existing owners with valid licences may continue to keep their dogs but must ensure they are leashed and muzzled in public. Failure to comply could attract a fine of Rs 5,000. New owners or breeders seeking licences after the deadline face a penalty of up to Rs 1 lakh.

The GCC has classified these breeds as aggressive, warning that they may behave unpredictably in public spaces, even if calm at home. The decision follows multiple attack reports and aims to safeguard residents in Chennai’s densely populated neighborhoods.

While licensed dogs will not be seized, strict enforcement measures will be in place to prevent further incidents and ensure public safety.
