Amid the ongoing controversy over the delayed release of actor Vijay’s Jana Nayagan due to censor certification issues, Congress MP B. Manickam Tagore has voiced strong support for the film and criticised the Centre’s handling of the matter. In a post on social media, Tagore accused the BJP-led government and the RSS of misusing authority in the film certification process, arguing that Jana Nayagan — a movie dealing with socially and politically relevant themes — was being entangled in unnecessary red tape.
Tagore said political and ideological motives appeared to be driving the controversy, rather than objective evaluation of the content. He alleged that films without substantial impact often go unnoticed, yet Jana Nayagan had been caught up in regulatory hurdles, which he described as a threat to cultural freedom and democratic expression.
The remarks come as the Madras High Court continues to hear the censorship case, with the film’s proposed January 9 release already thrown into doubt due to the unresolved certification process. Tagore’s intervention adds a political dimension to the debate, with supporters of the film arguing for a fair and timely resolution that respects artistic expression and audience anticipation.
