Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Friday laid the foundation stone for the new Broadway Bus Terminus, a flagship urban infrastructure project estimated to cost ₹8,227 crore that aims to transform transport facilities in the heart of the city. The event, held near Chennai’s historic Broadway area, was attended by senior government officials, local representatives and business leaders. The proposed terminus — one of the largest in South India — will be developed at Broadway and adjacent areas near Chennai Central, replacing existing facilities that have long faced congestion and capacity constraints. Designed as a multi-modal transport hub, the project will integrate city buses, inter-city services, commuter rail links and other urban transport modes to improve connectivity, reduce travel time and decongest central business districts.
In his address, CM Stalin said the project reflects the government’s commitment to modernising urban infrastructure and enhancing commuter convenience.
He emphasised that the Broadway Bus Terminus will be a “world-class facility” with passenger amenities, commercial spaces and seamless transit connectivity, positioning Chennai as a model for integrated urban transport planning. Officials noted that construction is expected to begin in the coming weeks and will be carried out in phases to minimise disruption to existing services.
