Thiruma dismisses AIADMK’s ₹10,000 poll promise as gimmick

In the run-up to the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) leader and Member of Parliament Thol Thirumavalavan has criticized a key electoral announcement made by the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), calling it a desperate attempt to sway voters amid expectations that the party is unlikely to return to power.
The controversy centres on a recent pledge by AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami to provide a one-time cash assistance of ₹10,000 to every family in the state if his party wins the election. The announcement, made as part of the AIADMK’s third phase of poll promises, is aimed at offering direct relief to households grappling with rising living costs and heightened taxes under the current government.
Responding to questions from reporters, Thirumavalavan dismissed the ₹10,000 promise as typical election rhetoric that he believes will have little impact on voters. He suggested that the announcement reflects a belief within the AIADMK ranks that the party will fail to secure a majority, thereby prompting populist pledges to garner support. According to him, the citizens of Tamil Nadu are already familiar with such promises and are unlikely to be swayed by them.
Thirumavalavan argued that free benefits in key areas should be limited to essential sectors such as education and healthcare, rather than broad cash handouts. He contrasted the AIADMK’s manifesto with the welfare schemes implemented by the ruling alliance, claiming that targeted support for specific groups such as women and students demonstrates fiscal responsibility and social benefit.
The ₹10,000 assistance is part of a broader set of sops proposed by the AIADMK, which also includes monthly unemployment stipends for registered jobseekers, increased relief for fishermen during ban periods, expanded free electricity quotas for weavers, and loan waivers for small traders — all designed to appeal to a wide cross-section of voters.
