Chennai, May 11:
The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam on Sunday elected Udhayanidhi Stalin as its Legislature Party leader, paving the way for him to assume the role of Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.
The decision was taken at a meeting of newly elected DMK MLAs held at Anna Arivalayam in Chennai under the leadership of party president M. K. Stalin.
With the DMK emerging as the second-largest party in the Assembly after the 2026 elections, Udhayanidhi’s elevation marks a significant generational shift in the party’s leadership and positions him as the principal challenger to the ruling government led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay.
Senior leaders K.N. Nehru and E.V. Velu were also appointed as Deputy Leader and party whip respectively, indicating a balanced mix of experience and new leadership within the DMK’s legislative wing.
Udhayanidhi, who retained his Chepauk–Thiruvallikeni seat in the recent elections, now steps into a crucial role at a time when Tamil Nadu is witnessing a major political transition, with the rise of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam ending decades of Dravidian dominance.
His appointment sets the stage for a direct political contest inside the Assembly between the ruling dispensation and the DMK, with expectations high on how the young leader will shape the party’s opposition strategy in the coming years.
