Chennai, June 2:
Tension prevailed in Tondiarpet after a 23-year-old youth was brutally murdered, allegedly by a gang involved in illegal ganja trade in the area.
The victim, Vishnu, a resident of Tondiarpet, had reportedly confronted a group engaged in the sale of ganja in the locality. Police sources said this led to hostility, culminating in a violent attack on him.
According to reports, the gang assaulted Vishnu using grinding stones, beer bottles and hammers, leading to his death on the spot. The gruesome nature of the murder has sent shockwaves through the neighbourhood.
Condemning the killing, local residents staged a road blockade on Monday night, demanding immediate action against the culprits. The protest led to severe traffic congestion in and around Tondiarpet, disrupting vehicular movement for several hours.
The protesters accused the police of acting sluggishly in handling the case. They also alleged that the victim’s family has been receiving continuous death threats following the incident, raising concerns over their safety.
Upon receiving information, police officials rushed to the spot and held talks with the agitating residents. They assured that swift action would be taken and that the accused would be apprehended at the earliest.
