Chennai, July 7:

Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Monday reviewed the functioning of the 110 MLD and 150 MLD desalination plants at Nemmeli, inspecting key facilities including the intake sump, Reverse Osmosis (RO) building and the SCADA control room. Chennai currently receives around 1,230 million litres of water per day from various lakes and desalination units, playing a crucial role in meeting the city’s growing demand.

The Chief Minister also assessed the progress of the upcoming 400 MLD desalination plant at Perur, being constructed at a cost of Rs 5,814.57 crore. As part of the project, pipeline-laying works covering 59 km from Perur to Porur are under way. Once completed, the facility is expected to benefit nearly 22.67 lakh residents across Chennai and Tambaram corporations, along with 20 surrounding panchayats.

Emphasising the importance of timely execution, Vijay directed officials to expedite the construction and ensure the project is brought into public use at the earliest. He was accompanied during the inspection by Human Resources Management Minister T. Sarathkumar, Additional Chief Secretary Gagandeep Singh Bedi, Metro Water Board Managing Director T. Anand, Chengalpattu District Collector M. Veerapaandi and other senior officials.
